I’m Not an Illustrator, But if I Was…

I’ve had several people over the years ask me if I did illustration. Most often I’ll say “I’m not an illustrator, but what do you need?” And several times I’ve been able to pitch in and contribute few illustrations to the cause on some projects. Since most of these never end up in my official portfolio, I thought I’d throw a few in my blog post.

While clearing off some old files, I found some of my first illustrations done in Adobe Illustrator (version 5.5). This one, a “woodcut” type illustration of me, I did back in 1996. At the time I had been still doing a lot of traditional art using a mid-tone canton paper drawing with white chalk for highlights and charcoal for shadows. I thought I’d try this with a few photographs of myself using Illustrator, and this is what I came up with:

Two years later in 1998, I had an opportunity to do this technique, or a similar one when I worked for Studeo. They had the Park City Chamber of commerce as a client and they had chosen an illustrated home page that would change with the seasons and time of day. I illustrated some of the buildings on main street in my fun style that ran on their home page for a couple of years. The season changes are a bit diffult to see at this size, they were twice as big on the website.

(I had some fun with the night one, here’s a close-up.)

I also ended up carrying the illustration designs through a microsite for one of their campaigns.

So why am I digging up all this old stuff? Well, I’m getting ready for my new website to launch pretty soon. I’ll do a post about that later. I hope to also post about my icon work, and some map work I’ve done over the years. In addition to the new website, hopefully this will give those of you who are looking for a designer and extra sense of my capabilities.

Happy New Year everyone!

Awesome. I think it’s great to expand your abilities and learn to do new things. From my perspective, the lines between graphic design and illustration, fine art, web, print… all that, are not so solid as many would have you believe. Rules of aesthetics always apply the same and again, it only helps you to increase your experience and marketability.

    Maybe I should say, “I’m not a designer, but if i was…”

Yup, you noticed that I haven’t got around to adding a logo to my blog as yet, and it seems lately there’s not been enough time for me to even do postings. But I do have a new design for the entire bradmccall.com website nearly complete that will integrate the blog as well as have a logo on every page.

    Thanks for your post!
